How to Repair Lost Volume on Laptop
Sound problems on a laptop arise from situations such as faulty sound cards, incorrect and outdated drivers and incorrect settings. Some of these problems do not require a technician’s attention.
1. Click the “Start” button on your screen, then click on the “Control Panel.” Double click on the “Sound and Audio” icon.
2. Click the “Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar” option to have it in the lower right corner. Click “OK” to save your settings.
3. Check your volume icon to make sure it does not have a red-and-white mute button around it.
4. Move the mouse click to the volume icon, then right click the mouse. Click on the “Open Volume Control” option on the pop-up menu. Remove the check on the mute button under the master control, if it is checked.
5. Move the volume slider in the master category upward. If you begin to hear sound, then the problem has been resolved.
6. Click the “Start” button on your screen, then click the “Run” option to check your Windows audio service. In the run window, type “services.msc” then click “OK.”
7. Scroll down the list in the services window, then right click the “Windows audio option.” Click on “Properties.”
8. Select the “Automatic” option under the “Startup” tab, then click “OK.” Test the sound. Try using headphones into the phone jack to test the sound.
9. Click the “Start” button, then select the “Control Panel” to check sound drives. Double click on “Sound and Audio” devices, then click the “Audio” tab.
10. Check the correct sound default device on your laptop under the “Sound Playback” option. If you installed other volume drivers on the laptop and you don’t know the correct default, consult your user manual or contact the manufacturer.
11. Click the “OK” button if you know and have selected your default playback driver. Test the sound. If it still does not work, try restarting the laptop. Check for the latest sound driver updates from your manufacturer’s website. If none of this works, contact your manufacturer for servicing and repair.
